Curling Chase Simms

Curling Looking for Strong Sweep at Regionals

Read about how Club Curling plans to compete at Regionals!

Club Curling recently battled at the MTU Huskies Spiel, where BGSU1 placed in 5th place, finishing with a regular season record of 8-3. We were able to catch up with Head Coach, Patrick Nelson before they travel to Hartland, Wisconsin, to compete in the Midwest Regional Championships, at the Kettle Moraine Curling Club. Hear from our team below:

"Our lead team, BGSU1, has a 8-3 record this year with loses only coming at the hands of Wisconsin who is the current 2 time defending College Curling National Champions. Two of those losses came down to the last stone of the game, and could have gone either way, so we are right there with the unanimous #1 team in College Curling. .... So, our expectations are high as we go into regionals expecting to win all our matches. Our BGSU2 and BGSU3 Teams are also improving and we have 5 recruits for next year who have played in U18 Nationals."

With a mindset like this, Club Curling plans to bring the heat as they make their way onto the ice. Also, we were able to catch up with Club Curling President Joe Boyle, who gave this insight on their mindset before the event:

"The most important thing to keep in mind playing in this regional event, and playing in any event, is to keep our heads up. As a team we have agreed that we play consistently and accurately when our spirits are high. It is also important to recognize the progress that each of us have made, on the performance side of our game, and on the mental side of our game. Every time we step on the ice, we are a better team than we were the last time. Keeping our improvements in mind, and holding our heads high are the two keys to winning matches, and we've seen these aspects produce so far this season."

Coach Nelson also ended up giving an answer to this, stating, "It's all about "locking in" for each shot. Giving all your attention and focus to execute the shot as a team until the rock comes to a complete stop. Then letting that shot go, good or bad, and Turning the focus to the "next shot/play."

With an incoming class of young stars, Club Curling is looking to show up and show out before their season is over.
