This past weekend, BGSU Curling co-hosted the Falcon-Rocket Bonspiel, where several teams from the Midwest and Northeast Regions in USA College Curling came to play. BGSU fielded two teams, BGSU-1 and BGSU-2. BGSU-1 came out hot, beating RIT 13-1 in the first match and their momentum continued from there. After taking down Notre Dame and Toledo, 6-3 and 10-2 respectively, they were primed with a major showcase versus their co-host, Toledo in the final Saturday matchup.
The varsity starters did not let off the gas pedal, beating Toledo-1, 11-2. While BGSU-2 competed very well throughout the entirety of the weekend, they were not able to secure a victory in the consolation match on Sunday morning, going down 2-10 versus Toledo. With their final game, BGSU-1 sadly fell to Michigan Tech, 4-7 in the A Event Finals.
When asked with the level of competition they faced this weekend, Freshman Varsity Starter
Peyton Marcin responded with their biggest triumph from this past weekend:
"Our biggest triumph from this past weekend was going undefeated through Friday and Saturday and advancing to the A Event Finals, then putting up a good fight against last years National Third Place team, Huskies Curl @ MTU."
BGSU Curling also knows that they can continue to compete the rest of the season, with the momentum they carry after this past tournament. Sophomore Varsity Starter
Joseph Boyle shares, "I think we will do well, it's at that point where our team is really gelling together and we're finding our groove. Our recent successes have made the goal of National Champions much less of a reach."
With team chemistry brewing in their pot, much of the team feels they can continue to push the envelope, making matches versus marquee programs like RIT and Michigan Tech not just more competitive, but more beneficial in their win column. Now, with the Midwest Regional Championship around the corner and a Michigan Tech Huskies Spiel coming up this weekend in Calumet, Michigan, Coach
Patrick Nelson was asked to share his input. On the topic of their strong chance to compete at the Copper Country Curling Club, Coach Nelson dove into his key points to focus on in achieving success in this tournament.
"I would say the team may not believe this yet, but we are the favorites this week. If we play the rocks and not the people, we will have a positive weekend."
From the wisdom and wise words of a crafty coach such as
Patrick Nelson, BGSU Curling has a strong chance to make magic happen and come out victorious in their adventure to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
