On February 22nd, Women's Rugby traveled to Grand Valley State University to compete in the CRC Qualifying Tournament, an event which gave them the opportunity to qualify for the NCR Collegiate Rugby Championship.
After taking down Northwestern in the first game, 21-14, BGSU tore up Saginaw Valley State University, 38-7. With two games to go and a mountain to climb, BGSU was able to take a rest with a 28-0 forfeit win vs Central Michigan. In the championship matchup, BGSU took on Grand Valley State University, the hosting team. With ease and strategic competence, BGSU took home the victory and the tournament, beating GVSU, 28-14.
President of the Women's Rugby team, Cat Broadwater, was able to share a quote on what qualifying for nationals means to their team:
"We qualified for nationals by winning our conference essentially. We had a mission, to qualify and while that has been the goal for the longest time something clicked, and we were able to win. I had the privilege to watch my teammates have fun on the field in a stressful circumstance. But to win our conference we have to create a bond within our team. Rugby is all about trusting your teammates to be there for you on the field. We have a saying, "with you" and that means that I am following right behind you and that I will make sure to be there. This translates off the field as well, our team has turned into a family, and I believe it is through that bond and our hard work that we won. "
"To make a National Championship tournament is the ultimate recognition. 1st for the university. Only 16 teams qualify for each division. This means qualifying schools are some of the best rugby schools to play for, which opens doors to future students. 2nd, the players' hard work and dedication are self satisfying, knowing they have achieved national status. 3rd, it allows players the opportunity to meet players from all corners of the USA, possibly forming a relationship for life and to be scouted potentially for a professional career. " shares Roger Switzer, Head Coach of the Women's Rugby team. With this accomplishment under their belts, many players will have a shot to see more experience on the national level, potentially life changing for some.
Sophomore Captain Jordyn Barr also shared her thoughts, introducing herself as well:
"Hi my names Jordyn, and I am one of the BGSU Women's Rugby captains. And I am pumped for nationals! This is the first time our Women's side has ever qualified to go so it's big news for the program. The players are going to experience the game at the highest level and gain once in a lifetime experience playing teams from all over the nation. It is also going to be good media exposure to get our name out there and recruit more players in the future. "
Women's Rugby had a successful fall season and looks to build on their momentum for the rest of the spring. Come April, be prepared to see potential for a shining achievement that would rival many.
