The Club Softball team faced off in a triple header series against the University of Michigan on September 29. After taking ten new players this year, the team was eager to see how everyone would mesh in a game setting.
The day began rough for the Falcons as they tried to get back into the swing of things. Sophomore Rachel Ebert was the starting pitcher followed by sophomore Libby Dix, who finished the remaining three innings of the game. Combined, the two allowed five hits, eight walks, and eleven runs. The rest of the defense did not start as strong as they were hoping for either. They racked up a total of three errors, contributing to the eleven runs scored by the Wolverines. Although there were some errors, the team pushed through and made some memorable plays. Sophomore Kara Haake started behind the plate and called an amazing first and third play with senior Savannah Posey to stop a run and get the third out of the third inning. Unfortunately, the offense could not compete with the pitching and there was only one hit made by junior Emma Jacobs along with one walk drawn by sophomore Sammy Gingras. The Falcons ended the first game with a final score of 0-11.
After the break, the girls were ready to return to the field to try and win the second game of the series. Libby Dix was their starting pitcher, who only allowed four hits, six walks, and five earned runs while also getting two strike-outs. Senior co-president Kamille Smith stepped in to pitch the final inning where she allowed three hits, five walks, and three earned runs. The rest of the defense had four errors total but showcased a double play made by sophomores Charlotte Stephan and Rachel Ebert to end the first inning. The Falcon offense was led by singles from freshman Kendal Sufka along with Sammy Gingras, Charlotte Stephan, and Rachel Ebert, whose hit brought in two runs for the team. Good eyes at the plate from Kamille Smith, Charlotte Stephan, freshman Sarah Rathbun, and junior Taylor Mitchell resulted in four free bases for the team. Although the Falcons seemed to be on the rise, they ended up falling short to the Wolverines 2-10.
The third game started strong for the Falcons as they began to string some hits together. Freshman Lauren Shaver singled on a ball to shortstop, loading the bases after sophomores Madelyn Sumner and Charlotte Stephan were both hit by pitches. Senior co-president Alexa Fulk had a clutch hit to left field, driving in two runs for the team. The defense stayed strong, helping sophomore pitcher Casey Marousch keep the Wolverines scoreless until the fourth inning. After a single from sophomore Alexa Rogers, Alexa Fulk had another clutch double which scored the third run for the team. Shortly after, Sarah Rathbun had a single to score the fourth run of the game. Although the team racked up a total of seven hits, they could not manage to hold the Wolverines and ultimately lost 4-9.Â
After getting some experience on the field as a team, the Falcons look forward to their next series. These games will be played at Bowling Green High School against Michigan State University on Sunday, October 13th at 10 am, 12 pm, and 2 pm.
