This past weekend, the BGSU Falcons kicked off their fall season by competing in the annual Battle Creek Blast in Battle Creek, MI. In pool play, the Falcons faced tough competition, including the Western Michigan Broncos, Grand Valley State Lakers, and Adrian Bulldogs.
The Falcons got things rolling against Western Michigan, led by an incredible performance from Noah Grendzynski on the mound. Grendzynski dominated the Broncos' lineup, tallying 12 strikeouts and keeping the opposing offense at bay. Key hits by Freshmen Austen Sertell and CJ Ramirez put the Falcons on top 6-2.
In Game 2 of the Battle Creek Blast, the Falcons faced a strong Grand Valley State University team but ultimately fell short, losing 4-0. Despite the loss, the Falcons were kept in the game by solid pitching performances from Ryan Rehner and Carter King. Both pitchers battled hard on the mound, limiting GVSU's offense and giving the team a chance to stay competitive.
However, the Falcons struggled to find their rhythm at the plate, with GVSU's pitching keeping the bats quiet throughout the game. Despite their efforts, BGSU couldn't break through offensively, resulting in a tough loss.
In their final pool play game, the Falcons faced Adrian College in a thrilling back-and-forth contest. The Falcons came out strong, jumping to a 4-1 lead by the second inning, showcasing an early offensive spark. However, Adrian fought back, overtaking the Falcons with a 5-4 lead by the fifth inning.
Despite their best efforts, BGSU couldn't mount a comeback late in the game. Adrian managed to hold the Falcons off, adding another run and securing a 6-4 victory. With this tough loss, the Falcons were eliminated from the tournament.
Although the weekend didn't end the way they had hoped, the Falcons showed grit and flashes of potential, providing a foundation to build on as they continue their fall season. They'll look to regroup and come back stronger in their next outing against Toledo on October 12th and 13th.
