BGSU's Club Sports wants to introduce the new Club Curling Coach, Patrick Nelson. Learn about his background through the interview conducted below.
What brought you to curling?
After the USA Men's Curling Team won the Gold Medal in PyeongChang in 2018, I signed up for a Learn-to-Curl event at the Bowling Green Curling Club (BGCC) and have never looked back. Now entering my 5th year as an active Member of the BGCC, I help to instruct curling events at the club and served as the Junior Committee chair during the 20-21' season, and then as the Membership Co-Chair for the club last season (21'-22'), which oversees all Junior Curling programs (in the sport of curling, U21 is considered a Junior Curler).
Last year one of our BGCC Junior Boy's Team represented the Great Lakes Curling Association at the U18 Nationals, after winning our regional event. Over the last 5 years we've grown our BGCC Junior Program to what is now the largest in our region and we are just getting college curling underway at BGSU.
What is your athletic and coaching experience?
I have an undergrad degree in Professional Golf Management (New Mexico State University '97), a Masters of Business Administration (NMSU '04), and have been a sports instructor for most of my life after earning my Class A-PGA Member Certification.
In the last 5 years, I turned my sports passion and attention to Curling Instruction & Development with the goal of competing at the National & International level as a Coach to U21/College Curling Teams.
The 22-23' Season will be our first year as a College Curling Club and we are looking to take BGSU to the USA Curling College National Championships in the near future.
