Women’s Club Hockey Introduces Head Coach, Mike Whitton

Mike WhittonBGSU's Women's Club Hockey team officially welcomed their new head coach, Mike Whitton to their coach staff. While the team rebooted in 2019, they were searching for an established and skilled coaching staff. Among the team was Mike as Assistant Coach. Now, Mike is officially recognized as the head coach for the 2020-2021 season by BGSU Club Sports.  
 
Mike, a native of Scarborough, Ontario, Canada, is no stranger to coaching hockey. He is a USA Hockey, Level 4 Certified Coach. Mike started his coaching career with the Woburn Wildcats (High School) Women's Hockey Program of the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations in 1989 as Head Coach.  
 
6 years later, in 1995, Mike graduated Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Business Administration and was a four-year letter winner with the Broncos of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA).
 
After graduation, Mike played hockey professionally for three years in the American Hockey League (AHL), East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), West Coast Hockey League (WCHL) and the Western Professional Hockey League (WPHL) with the majority of time spent with the Toledo Storm (ECHL). 
 
During the off-season in his playing career, Mike was the Head Instructor of numerous hockey schools across the Midwest and Canada including Western Michigan University Hockey School, Kalamazoo Optimist Hockey Association (KOHA), Toledo Storm Hockey School, Huron Hockey School and Durham Hockey Schools. 
 
Following his playing career, Mike began coaching again in 1999 as an Assistant Coach of the Toledo Cherokee of Central States Hockey League (CSHL). Since then, over a number of years, he has coached many Sylvania Metro Amateur Hockey League (SMAHL), Toledo Cherokee Girls Hockey of the Greater Toledo Amateur Hockey Association (GTAHA) and Sylvania North Stars teams. He also served on the USA Hockey staff as Head Instructor of numerous American Development Model (ADM), Initiation Program (IP), Coaching Certification and hockey school sessions in Northwest Ohio. Additionally, Mike was also a member of the Hockey Player Development (HPD) program in Toledo as an instructor. 
 
With a lot of experience and skills on his resume, Mike is a driven head coach. He is dedicated to the Women's Club Hockey team not only as a head coach, but as part of their hockey family.
