Cleveland, Ohio – This past weekend, BGSU Club Tennis Bowling Green Tennis brought an A and B team to the Cleveland Classic, hosted by Case Western Reserve University. After an early 8:00 AM start and a long weekend, BGSU A emerged victorious after earning their way into the finals vs. Case Western A. Ultimately rain prevented the final match, however BGSU A's overall play and dropping the fewest matches allowed them to secure a much-earned tournament win. The A team brought home a win in their first tournament of the season with the B Team locked in a top 5 finish in the gold bracket.
The A team opened pool play with a dominant 30-2 win over West Virginia University. They followed up with victories against Case Western B (27-20) and Dayton (25-17). Finishing pool play off undefeated, the A team advanced to gold for bracket play on Sunday. The B team faced a tough opening draw against Case Western A, falling short 10-30. They bounced back with a strong 30-11 win over Kent State, which was enough to secure a spot in the Gold Bracket, as well.
To start off bracket play, the B team took on Grand Valley State University. The women's doubles team, Cambria Wolff and Ellie Ferrante, fought hard, forcing a tiebreaker. After Wolff was sidelined with an injury, Callie Christner subbed in, and she and Ferrante pulled off the win 6–5 (5–2). In Men's doubles, Joe Brown and Joseph Veeck had a great comeback! After trailing 1-3 they came back to win 5 straight games for a final score of 6-3. Men's singles, Jackson LaPointe, and women's singles, Tessa Scott, fought hard, but fell just short to the Lakers. Mixed doubles, Sydney Peterson and Tommy Heegan, pulled off a great 6-2 win to force a comeback clause. In the end, BGSU B fell 2 games short to Grand Valley. The B team finished with an impressive 5th place overall.
Meanwhile, the A team played Xavier University in their first round. The team earned a 28-17 win against the Musketeers. In the semi-finals, they squared off against Ohio State University. Women's doubles, Madi Barberree and Abby Hover, pulled through a tight 6–5 (5–2) tiebreak win, while men's doubles, Luke Suchyta and Jacob Rabenhorst, followed with a strong 6–2 victory. Carson Weigle and Morgan Truscott fought hard in their singles matches. Men's singles lost 1-6 and Women's singles won 6-2. In mixed doubles, Maru Poppe and Jacob Rabenhorst sealed the match 6-3, lifting the Falcons to an overall 25-19 team victory over the Buckeyes.
In the finals, BGSU A was set to face Case Western A. Unfortunately, rain halted play early. After tallying the fewest games dropped throughout the tournament, BGSU A was declared the winners for the second year in a row! Overall, both the A and B teams represented BGSU with pride. The A team brought home the championship trophy, while the B team secured a top five finish in the gold bracket.
