It has been a long off season for the BGSU Men's Club Hockey team. After a disappointing season with a close loss in the first round of the playoffs, the team has been anxiously awaiting the start of the season. Some key additions to the team were added during the off season including former Division 1 Falcon
Chase Danol, and new stud defensemen,
Nick Tigges and
Logan Hartje.
After 3 weeks of practice, the Falcons traveled to Madison, Wisconsin this past weekend for a season opening series against the University of Wisconsin Badgers. The Falcons faced off against the Badgers Friday night at the Camp Randall Sports Center where
Luke Schuler kicked off the scoring in the second period. The Falcons would continue to surge in the third when
Cole Ferri netted a huge goal. The Badgers quickly responded scoring 3 goals unanswered in the third period, however there was no quit from the Falcons.
Chase Danol took matters into his own hands and tied the game up at 3 less than a minute later. The game would go into overtime and
Cole Ferri tapped in the game winning goal to be the hero to make the final score 4-3 Falcons.
It was a quick turnaround as the next matchup between Badgers and Falcons would be no more than 12 hours later with puck drop at 9 AM. The Badgers scored first but there was no quit in the Falcons as they scored 3 unanswered goals to make it 3-1. Disaster loomed as the Falcons took a couple of penalties and the Badgers converted to make it 3-3. They would go on to score a 4
th near the end of the period and bury an empty netter with 26 seconds left for a 5-3 Badger win.
It was a weekend split for the Falcons and a complete 360-degree turnaround from last year's opening series when the Badgers beat the Falcons by scores of 7-4 and 7-2. "We have some things to clean up but for our first games of the year I am extremely proud of our team. Wisconsin is a tough opponent and it will set the tone for the rest of the year" said Head Coach
Drew Harper when asked about his comment on the weekend performance. The Falcons will have a home and home series with the University of Dayton Flyers this coming weekend, with the home opener at the Slater on Friday, September 23 at 8 PM. The Falcons will head south to Dayton on Saturday to face the Flyers again at 5:30 PM from Kettering Ice Arena.
