The Men's Club Hockey team had their season opener at the University of Michigan on September 19, followed by their home opener against the University of Michigan on September 20. With over half of their players being freshmen, there was a lot to be learned over their two days of games.
Michigan led the way in the first game after scoring two goals in the first period. It wasn't until the third period that the Falcons could begin to catch up. With six minutes left of the third, senior Mark Rudo came in with a clutch shot with the assist from sophomore Jack Kleinow to score the Falcon's first goal. Shortly after, freshman Caleb Keisel took a chance on a shot and was successful with an assist from Mark Rudo. Both teams stayed even, sending only five players to the penalty box each. Sophomore Riley Martin served as the goalie for the night saving an incredible 39 of the 44 attempted shots by the Wolverines. Unfortunately, the Falcons lost in a close 2-5 game.Â
After some experience playing the Wolverines the night before, the BGSU Men's Club Hockey team hoped to fight back and win their home opener in the Slater Family Ice Arena as they set up for a rematch against the University of Michigan. The Wolverines scored first again but the Falcons came out strong, scoring shortly after. With the help of freshman Anderson Parker, Jack Kleinow snuck the puck past the Michigan goalie to score the Falcon's only goal of the night. After a hard fight with the Wolverines, the Falcons ended up taking a 1-4 loss for their second game of the season. The team's head coach Drew Harper recognized Mark Rudo for being a great senior leader along with sophomore Mitchell Norkevicius who played a great game as goalie.
"We have a ton of new players on the team and they battled hard against a strong Michigan team," coach Harper said. "The experience they gained over the weekend will help get them ready for the rest of the season.
"The team had some tough competition to start their season, but look forward to adding some wins to their record. The team's next game will be on Friday, October 11 in Athens, Ohio against Ohio University. The Falcons will then host Ohio University on Saturday, October 12 at the Slater Family Ice Arena at 10 pm.
