October: Alumni Spotlight

October's Alumni spotlight is Mr. Michael Sopocy. He is a 2005 men's club volleyball alumnus who now serves at North Park University as the Director of Volleyball Operations for Men's and Women's volleyball. Sopocy, formerly a Division 2 volleyball commit to Roger Williams before deciding to attend BGSU to play club volleyball, believes that playing club volleyball helped him become a premier division 3 coach and the eventual Director of Volleyball Operations, allowing him to build his leadership qualities serving as president and treasurer from 2001-2005. Sopocy wanted those considering playing club sports to be left with these words: "It's nice to play a sport you love where you can balance the other things in your life. The sport is not handled like it's your job."

Below are Mr. Michael Sopocy's response to a variety of questions:

Q. What was your favorite memory playing club sports?

  1. Playing at nationals. We placed every single year I was on the team, as high as 8th one year.
Q. What made you want to play club sports?
  1. I turned down several D2 offers to go to BG, it was not in my plans. I actually committed to Roger Williams and on the way home we stopped off I-75 and figured I would check it out since we were there. We ran into Clint McCabe who happened to be the club volleyball president and ended up staying the night and played with them. After playing with the team, my decision was easy. I uncommitted from Roger Williams and went to BGSU.
Q. What was your favorite part of being in club sports?
  1. The friendships. I still talk to several teammates on a weekly basis and have formed life-long bonds with them.
