Meet the Men and Women’s Lacrosse Coach, Stu Smith

BGSU's Club Sports wants to introduce the new Men and Women's Lacrosse Coach, Stu Smith. Learn about his background through the interview conducted below.

What is your background?

I was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio where I played hockey and lacrosse. I graduated from Kent State University with a degree in Physical Education and Human Movement Studies with a Minor in Athletic Coaching. I coached hockey and lacrosse at Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh PA. Currently I work as the Assistant Director of Intramurals and Club Sports at BGSU.

What is your athletic and coaching experience?

I played Lacrosse for Kings High School in Kings Mills, OH where I scored the first goal in program history. I grew up playing hockey and played my junior hockey in Cincinnati and in Iowa. From there I went to Kent State University where I played college hockey. I started coaching hockey from beginning skaters up to Varsity level hockey at Walsh Jesuit High School in Cuyahoga Falls OH. From there I took a job coaching lacrosse and hockey at Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh PA. We set the single season wins record (29) with the hockey program. While with the lacrosse program we won two 3A Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) Championships 2015 and 2022.

I am excited about the opportunity to work with both the Men's and Women's Lacrosse programs. I know Lacrosse has a storied history at BGSU when it was competing at the Division I level going back to the 70's and that it has a very proud group of Alumni.
