Stu was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio where he played hockey and lacrosse. Smith graduated from Kent State University with a degree in Physical Education and Human Movement Studies with a Minor in Athletic Coaching and coached hockey and lacrosse at Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh PA. Currently Stu works as the Assistant Director of Intramurals and Club Sports at BGSU.
 
Stu played Lacrosse for Kings High School in Kings Mills, OH where he scored the first goal in program history. He grew up playing hockey and played junior hockey in Cincinnati and in Iowa. From there Stu went to Kent State University where he played college hockey. Smith began coaching hockey from beginning skaters up to varsity level hockey at Walsh Jesuit High School in Cuyahoga Falls OH and also coached lacrosse and hockey at Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh PA where his team set the single season wins record (29) with the hockey program. While with the lacrosse program Stu's athletes were 3A Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) Champions in 2015 and 2022.
 
Stu is excited about the opportunity to work with both the Men's and Women's Lacrosse programs knowing Lacrosse has a storied history at BGSU when it was competing at the Division I level going back to the 70's and that it has a very proud group of Alumni.
