Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green Men's Rugby Team (7-1, 5-0 MAC) rolls past Ohio University in their final regular season home game with a 86-0 win. The Falcons have not lost to the Bobcats since 2005. Bowling Green has extended their lead in the MAC and remains the No. 1 Seed with 25 points and a 5-0 conference record.
"It was a good runout. With a game like that sometimes we get a little sloppy, which we did. I thought we reined it back in in the second half and played some good rugby," said Head Coach Tony Mazzarella. " Again, always a good opportunity when you put zero on the board as far as defense."
The last time the Falcons faced the Bobcats was in the 50-0 away win in Fall 2023. The 86-0 win is the most points by BG in a match this season. The Falcons scored a season high 14 tries, and made 8 conversions during the match.
"Any time that you can shut out a team its a success. We played our game on both sides of the ball this weekend which is what led us to that result," said Captain Joey Apel. "Lots of guys stepped up into positions that they aren't as comfortable in and I am beyond proud of how hard they worked."
From kickoff the Falcons dominated the match. BG would open with two quick tries within the opening five minutes of the game.Fullback Brian Arnold following a BG scrum within the Bobcats 22 while Center Joe Romshe would score off a center scrum from Flyhalf Joey Apel's 50 meter grub kick. The Falcons would continue to run up the score, with seven tries from six different Falcons being scored in the first half to go up 48-0. At halftime, several BG players got rested. However, the substitutes kept the foot on the gas. BG would continue to dominate the match, scoring another five tries and securing the 86-0 win.
Although it was a dominant victory it was not a perfect match, the Falcons did dip in form a few times throughout the match, however they did not let the Bobcats into the game. It was a successful weekend providing minutes to rotation players and resting starters which will surely boost confidence heading into the final MAC weekend away to Western Michigan No. 12 (No. 3 in MAC) in Kalamazoo Michigan, on November 2nd at 1pm.
