The BGSU Men's Rugby club crushed a game but over matched West Virginia University team on Saturday on a pair of shutouts 67- 0 and 96-0. Only head coach Tony Mazzarella's liberal use of reserves in both matches kept the scores from being even larger.
A quick start was important as the Falcon ruggers run right into the start of the their championship defending Mid American Conference schedule this Saturday against always dangerous but snakebit when facing the Falcons - Ohio University. The Falcons will host the Bobcats in a two match set stating at 1:00pm at the College Park Rugby Field. Last fall Bowling Green defeated the Bobcats by scores of 59-0 and 38-7 down Athens. Ohio has not defeated BG since 2004 - a span of thirty two games.
In Saturday's first match against the Mountaineers, the forwards were clearly dominant, stealing scrums and lineouts from UWV and scoring ten of eleven of Bowling Green's tries. Flanker Jake Hudak got his name in the record book by scoring four tries - one coming on a kickoff reception and a 65 yard run.
Also scoring tries were hooker Kyle Sikora, eight man John Stuhldreher, fullback Beau Abbott, flanker Kobe Choat, prop Ryan McBride, lock Zach Szepiela, and lock Xavier Everett. Scrum half Ryan Niemiller booted five conversion kicks and fly half Jake Kubicki and one more.
In the second match it was the forwards that took the back seat as the Falcon backs punched over 13 of BG's 16 tries. This time it was sophomore wing Owen Slimmer that got his name in the record book scoring four tries, all coming on runs of 50 yards or more. Fellow backs scrum half Fitz Metzger, Colton Crabel (twice). center Gary Brammer, wing Joey Apel, scrum half Griffin Wlson (hat trick), wing Jon Blinkhorn all joined Slimmer in the end zone. Forwards flanker Harvey Harris, prop Ryan Son, and eight man Seth Hocking all scored solo tries.
