The Bowling Green Men's rugby team fell behind 14-0 in the 1st match and had to spent the rest of the afternoon over the course of three games trying to catch up and never quite closing the gap.
Penalties did the Falcons in as they took on their longest rival Ohio State in three matches on Saturday. BG and Ohio State have played each other more than any other rivalry they have going against another team. BG's first ever game, a 5-3 victory in 1968, was against the Buckeyes (OSU had been founded fours years before in 1964 and even contributed BGSU cofounder Jerry Nicolosi).
As good as the defending BIG Ten champions were, BG did a lot on their own to contribute to the defeat starting right off on the opening whistle and ending with a penalty flurry that killed what could have been an epic comeback at the end of the first game.
With the Buckeyes up 14-0, the Falcons stormed right back to score on tries by hooker Kyle Sikora and prop Ryan McBride and conversion kicks by flyhalf Jake Kubicki. But OSU went right back to work punching in two more tries and a penalty kick to take a 31-14 lead.
Again the Falcons stormed back with a try by flanker Kobe Choat only to see a second try nullified by yet another penalty. The Buckeyes iced the game with ten more points at the end to win 41-19.
In the second match eight man Jacob Eicholtz tied up the match a five all only to see the Buckeyes slip a pair of tries in at the end to win the second match 15-5.
The third match featuring most of Bowling Green's freshmen saw OSU take an early 10-0 lead, but BG could only match a solo try by prop Luke Clifton as the Falcons lost 10-5.
The Falcons, now 7-3 overall and 2-0 in the MAC, get back to MAC play this weekend. BG will host IUPUI at 1:00pm on Saturday at the College Park Rugby Field for their fourth home game in a row.
