It has been nearly two years since Bowling Green State University played a rugby game that counted but it is almost as if that last match was just last week. The team, which has been given an elevated status that is between that of a club and a full varsity sport, is now part of the Falcon Athletic Department. Much of this is due to the success the club has achieved over the past couple decades as a collegiate rugby powerhouse.
Â
The team has been the Mid-American Conference champions every year since 1982 and has been a national finalist sixteen times in the past twenty years. The Falcons finally hit the jackpot in 2018 when they became the fourth BGSU team to win a National Championship, defeating St. Joseph's of Philadelphia 26-7.Â
Â
BGSU finished third in 2019, but are looking to a 2018 repeat and are already ranked #1 in the country.

In addition, the Falcons have reeled off four huge wins: 47-15 and 31-10 against the University of Michigan and a pair 59-0 and 38-7 victories over Ohio University. "I guess you could call it a minor victories of sorts for the Wolverines. It was the first time they have scored on us since 2010 - eight games ago," commented BG rugby operations manager Roger Mazzarella. Since 1983, Michigan has only managed one victory against the Falcons. "I guess we are sort of in a competition with Ohio State," chuckled Mazzarella
Â
And the Falcons are accomplishing this with a very heavy freshman/sophomore squad that features just four seniors on the sixty man team. ""We knew as soon as COVID hit that we needed to shoot towards a fall 2021 restart and all of our efforts went into scouring Ohio to make up the next crew that was going to keep us rolling," stated BGSU head coach
Tony Mazzarella.
